What's growin' on?

Hello everyone, hope you are all as excited about this weeks delivery as I am. Things have really taken off with the warm weather and showers that we had last week. We are finally seeing some of that growth that I was hoping for a couple of weeks earlier. As you can see, the strawberries are now in full effect. We should be enjoying these for a good two to three more weeks. An interesting side comment about the strawberries, they just don't seem to have quite the sweetness that they had last year to me. I am wondering if this is due to the excessive rains we have been having this spring. More water dilutes the sugars in the fruit and results in less sweetness. I would be interested in hearing comments from returning members about their thoughts on this.

This week sways the other direction on the pendulum than the previous two weeks deliveries. We have gone above average, hopefully not giving too much food for folks to handle! Soon enough we should settle down to a consistent average (as soon as the weather decides too!).

This past week on the farm we planted 2,400 linear feet of winter squash. A few of the varieties included Spaghetti squash, Red Kuri, Sweet Dumpling, Acorn and Butternut. We should be seeing these in your shares starting mid August through the end of the season. Plastic was hand-laid for the first planting of peppers and eggplants. They were then transplanted from the greenhouse into the field and are looking healthy. We trellised the first planting of tomatoes, they have gotten pretty big pretty fast (can't wait!). The second planting of beans, squash and cucumbers went in the ground as well, as the first is up and growing. We have been direct seeding as well as transplanting many beds of summer annual flowers as well. Many flowers are in the ground and growing strong so flower share members will see the majority of their bouquets this summer.

Recipes, Cooking, and Storage Tips

Fennel, oh boy! Foeniculum vulgaris. My guess is that many of you are unfamiliar with this delicacy, although a few are very familiar and very fond. Fennel has been used for centuries as a food, medicine, herb and even insect repellent. The bulb is eaten in salads fresh or cooked. The feathery leaves can be used as an herb like dill in dishes. Here are some ideas:

  • Try cutting the fennel bulb into quarters, drizzle with olive oil and bake for about 35 minutes until tender.
  • Try an arugula and fennel salad drizzled with a citrus dressing.
  • Use feathery leaves as a fresh herb for seasoning.

Store fennel in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. The feathery stalks may wilt like that so wrap them in a moist towel first.

What to look forward to...

In the next couple of weeks we will be seeing broccoli, as the plants are big and ready to produce. We are seeing the end of the turnips and radishes, sad for many, a joy for others. We will be seeing more spinach and kale. Sweet peas are just starting to come on, as many full share members received them this week. We were a little short so about five full share members did not receive them, sorry for that I know what a treat they can be. We will be seeing a couple more weeks of this delicacy. More lettuce and salad greens are on their way. The spicy lettuce mix and mixed greens will be in next weeks shares along with lettuce heads. The carrots and beets are on their way but will still be about two to three more weeks before we can harvest them. There may be one more week of Asian cabbage, but we are seeing the end of that as well, as it doesn't take well to the warm weather to come.
