July 6 2011, Week 12

Hello Members!  Wow!  Thanks to all the folks who came out and braved the heat this Sunday to help us harvest potatoes!  I think I counted nearly 30 folks in the field at one point (including children!).  We were able to just about go through all the beds in the two hours folks were here, leaving us only a little work to finish up.  What a big help!!  In addition to potatoes there were toads, Colorado Potato Beetles, unidentified fuzzy orange caterpillars…the kids found them all.  So, enjoy those ‘taters this week, and know there are more to come.

Last of the leeks….potato leek soup???  Next week, more onions as we have a bunch curing that should last us through the season.  The melons have started, and hopefully should last us a good few weeks as we have multiple plantings in the ground.  The Sugar Baby is a medium size watermelon, weighing in at about 5-6 pounds (Full shares, your boxes are going to be heavy!!).  The Red Delicious is a more reasonable size of 2-3 pounds at maturity.  I love these small ‘ice box melons’ since the fit in the box nicely and don’t break our backs during harvest ;)

Well, it is peak week for our first planting of tomatoes, if you couldn’t tell by the plethora in your box!  We won’t see you receiving quite as many again, so this is your week to stock up on salsa, Gazpacho and sauces.  The cherry tomatoes have finally taken off too, and what a sweet treat they are,  so enjoy.

To come in July….more eggplant, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, melons (watermelon and cantaloupe), cucumbers, Green Chile and Poblano peppers, and hopefully the first colored bells.  In August we will see the addition of Sweet Potatoes (that’s right, its my first year ever growing sweet potatoes and they look great!!), more basil, winter squash, summer squash, cucumbers, melons, green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers, onions……am I forgetting anything….??!!
