What's going on at the farm?

Hello Members!  I hope you all had a good week.  We have had a bountiful season so far, but for now we are seeing our variety and supply dwindling :(  A few unfortunate losses have caught up with us: peppers due to Southern Stem Blight, basil we couldn’t get to germinate, low yielding potatoes as some of them rotted after planting from the excessive wet weather in the spring.  The excessive heat this summer has been hard on the plants and the farmers, but so is farming, we are at the mercy of the weather.  This is the time of year it is important to remember the successes for morale’s sake!  Thinking back to the yummy strawberries, sugar snap and shelling peas, carrots, beets and at present our tomatoes, brings a smile to my face :)

Speaking of tomatoes!  Some of the ones you have received this week may be a little less ripe, so you can set them on the counter to let them fully ripen and enjoy them this weekend!  Once tomatoes have started to turn, they can be harvested and will reach their full flavor potential.  In the commercial industry, tomatoes are picked green, before they have started to turn, then gassed to trigger ripening.  This is a lot of the reason why store bought tomatoes don’t have as a good of flavor as local ones.

The eggplant is starting to pick back up again so hopefully we will see more of that next week.  We also have a late planting of basil in the ground that we hope to be harvesting by next week or the week after so you can all get your pesto made and frozen for the winter.  More butternut squash, potatoes and tomatoes to come.  We experimented with a late planting of leeks and will have one week of those for you all at some point too.

That’s all I got for this week!  Let me know if you have any thoughts, concerns or feedback.  I love to hear from you!  Elise.
